Looking west.
Looking back.
Our starting point is Connacht: the west of Ireland, and a distinctive part of the Connolly story.
One surname.
Several origins.
Connolly can represent the Irish names Ó Conghaile and Ó Conghalaigh, derived from the personal names Conghal and Conghalach. The first is associated with the meaning “hound valiant”. Similar English spellings can conceal different Irish origins. [1]
A connection to investigate.
We have not yet established our family’s route into Connacht. This site begins with regional surname history; a specific migration story needs family records.
The Galway connection
Historian Cormac Ó Gráda links Galway’s Connollys to Ó Conghaile and notes their concentration in Connemara. His study of the 1911 census identifies pockets around Clifden, An Cheathrú Rua and Ceantar na nOileán. [2]
Across Connacht
The same research finds a notable concentration of the surname in north Sligo and Leitrim. Connacht is therefore a useful starting point, but a county, parish or townland is needed to follow an individual family. [2]
Follow the spelling, carefully
Conneely and related spellings are particularly relevant to western Irish research. They may also represent Mac Conghaile. Search variant spellings, then use dates, places and relatives to establish whether records belong to the same people. [1]
A shared name opens a conversation.
Records establish the relationship.
Start with a place.
Then a person.
Send us the earliest Connolly ancestor you know, an approximate date, and a place associated with them. A parish, townland or name of a spouse can be more useful than a long list of unsourced generations.
